Chapter 14. Doing Things in a Certain Way
Wallace Wattles says in his famous book The Science of Getting Rich that you don’t get rich by doing certain things. You get rich by doing things in a certain way.
Now, I know most of you think you could be rich if you were a doctor or a business owner, but that’s just not true. You do NOT get rich doing certain things (operating on patients or running a business that sells corn flakes.) You get rich by doing things in a certain way.
One person sets up a coffee shop in downtown Seattle and gets poor. Another person sets up a coffee shop across the street called Starbucks and gets rich.
Do you really think that owning a coffee shop is going to make you rich? Of course not! It’s ludicrous to assume that the simple act of owning a coffee shop would lead to fortune and fame.
Owning a coffee shop and doing things in a certain way—now that will make you rich. But the point is this: the coffee shop doesn’t matter. YOU matter. It’s all about how you do what you do.
Donald Trump got rich in real estate. He bought real estate, invested in real estate, rented real estate, developed real estate and did all kinds of things with real estate. And he got rich. But I’m sure you know someone else who invested in real estate and didn’t get rich.
A friend of my parents’ invested in real estate and, if it weren’t for the tax deductions, they would have lost money on it. I know there are others out there who speculated in real estate in California, Florida or somewhere else and lost millions when the housing market went through a correction in 2008.
So does real estate make you rich? Of course not. You make yourself rich or not. It’s up to you. It’s all about how you do it.
In any industry or business, you will find hundreds, thousands or even millions of people who went broke, and a few who got rich. There’s no industry where everyone got rich. So stop trying to look for that “sure thing” and start focusing on doing “the right thing.”
